INFINITE HOPE Jesus Christ Sculpture on Display for Grand Rapids Michigan ART PRIZE September 23-October 10

I am very exicited to be participating in the Grand Rapids Michigan ART PRIZE contest! It was open to artists worldwide and $500,000 in cash is being awarded to the top 10 pieces of art. Winners will be determined by public popularity vote. And the top 3 winners will be on permanent display in the city of Grand Rapids. This is the very first year of the contest and about 1200 artists were able to fins spaces to display their art throughtout the city. My piece is on display in a wonderful, beautiful gallery called OPEN CONCEPT GALLERY (50 Louis St NW 6th floor, Grand Rapids, MI 49503-2680 (616) 233-9722).

"Infinite Hope" is my biggest project to date! It is a sculpture I made primarily of wood, foam and crystals. Through research, I learned that Jesus was 5'3' tall (which made him actually a tall Jewish man at that time). I used cooper tubing to make his 5'3'' skeleton and then built from there. After sealing the sculpture, I utilized a metallic paint to give Jesus a metal look (thus avoiding the weight of a metal sculpture- while achieving the look I desired). The actual sculpting portion of this work took 4 1/2 months to complete. I then spent the past 10 months encrusting Jesus with almost 250,000 Swarovski crystals (four different types of Swarovski crystals were used). To me the brilliance of the crystalized Jesus symbolizes all
of the hope religion and my faith bring to me.

"Infinite Hope" started as my way of expressing what faith and religion mean to me. Over the past several years I have witnessed how religion has often been misused to separate and divide people. Throughout history, countries have fought countless wars that were based on the
inability to accept others' faith and differences.

I am a simple person with simple beliefs. I don't think religion should be about exclusion- I believe all religions should be based on unconditional love and learning to understand and co-exist with all of our neighbors (even when their beliefs vary significantly from our own). It should not matter what anyone's particular faith is- in my simple way of thinking, my "religion" gives me
INFINITE HOPE in this life and in the after-life.

Dan Aykroyd Loves Skulls, Vodka and Art!

Last year I read that Dan Aykroyd was expanding his wine and spirits empire. He partnered to create the Dan Aykroyd Winery in Canada, is owner of Crystal Head vodka and co-founder of House of Blues.

Dan commissioned John Alexander to work on a skull container for the vodka.

"The vodka originates from an idea my friend artist John Alexander had. He's been going to the Mexican "Day of the Dead" celebration for some time.

He has been putting skulls in his artwork for years. He wanted put tequila in a glass skull and I said that's a brilliant idea but I'm the importer of Patron into Canada. [Aykroyd got involved with Alloy Brands four years ago]. So I'm involved with the greatest tequila in the world. I don't want to be associated with another tequila. That would be like Pepsi salesman drinking Coke.

He drew the skull on a napkin and it was beautiful and it hit me. Let's bring back the Mitchell-Hedges skull that was found in the Yucatan. There is the legend of the 13 crystal heads found around the world that were referenced in the Indiana Jones movie. I said let's use a liquid that is a pure spirit. Let's go back to the old style of rural white lightning and good old-fashioned moonshine."

Right now, the Crystal Head Vodka, is only available in California, Texas, Nevada, Louisiana and Florida and retail's for $49.95 per 750 ml bottle.

A friend of mine got me a bottle of the Vodka as gift and Dan autographed it for me! To thank him I 'crystalized' another bottle of his vodka, and it presented to him at an event this past summer.

He actually called me and told me he will always keep it in his art collection. His Crystal Head Vodka team has also contacted me about creating more of the crystalized vodka bottles to be used as promotional gifts or for Dan Aykroyd to give to close friends.

New Animal Skull Art - Zebra, Ram and Kudu

The Kudu's, part of the antelope family, have these amazing horns!
But the Zebra has a great skull to work with....

I would like to do an alligator or crocodile skull soon, but haven't

The Many Facets of the Human Skull

According to Wikipedia.org, the adult skull is normally made up of 22 bones. Except for the mandible, all of the bones of the skull are joined together by sutures, synarthrodial (immovable) joints formed by bony ossification, with Sharpey's fibres permitting some flexibility.

At birth, the human skull is made up of 40 separate bony elements. As growth occurs, many of these bony elements gradually fuse together into solid bone.

The skull is one of the most durable substances found in nature. In some cases, however, of head injury, there can be raised intracranial pressure through mechanisms such as a subdural haematoma.

In these cases the raised intracranial pressure can cause herniation of the brain out of the foramen magnum ('coning') because there is no space for the brain to expand; this can result in significant brain damage or death unless an urgent operation is performed to relieve the pressure. This is why patients with concussion must be watched extremely carefully.

Dating back to Neolithic times, a skull operation called trepanation was sometimes performed. This involved drilling holes in the cranium. Examination of skulls from this period reveals that the "patients" sometimes survived for many years afterward. It seems likely that trepanation was performed for ritualistic or religious reasons and not only as an attempted life-saving technique.

Like the face of a living individual, a human skull and teeth can also tell, to a certain degree, the life history and origin of its owner. Forensic scientists and archaeologists use metric and nonmetric traits to estimate what the bearer of the skull looked like.

In general, male skulls tend to be larger and more robust than female skulls, which are more gracile. Male skulls typically have more prominent supraorbital ridges, a more prominent glabella, and more prominent temporal lines. Male skulls on average have larger, broader palates, squarer orbits, larger mastoid processes, larger sinuses, and larger occipital condyles than those of females. Male mandibles typically have squarer chins and thicker, rougher muscle attachments than female mandibles.

All of these features vary considerably within human populations, making it difficult to identify the sex of a skull without knowledge of the population from which it came.

Although persons' descents are occasionally stereotyped as different from other ethnic groups on the basis of a variety of traits like eye, hair and skin color, all such characters are not discrete nor preserved in bones.

Among archaeologists and forensic scientists, it is still sometimes stated that the most consistent and unique trait of ancestry in skeleton is skull shape.

In Wikipedia.org, we find Swarovski is the luxury brand name for the range of precision-cut lead crystal glass products produced by companies owned by Swarovski AG of Feldmeilen, near Zürich, Switzerland.

The company runs a crystal-themed indoor theme park, Swarovski Kristallwelten (Crystal Worlds) at its original Wattens site (near Innsbruck, Tyrol, Austria).

Swarovski crystal was first created when Daniel Swarovski invented an automatic cutting machine in 1892. In 1895 the Swarovski company was founded when he established a crystal cutting factory in Wattens. Here he could take advantage of local hydroelectricity for the energy-intensive grinding processes he had patented.

Swarovski crystal contains approximately 32% lead to maximize refraction. The Swarovski Crystal range includes crystal sculptures and miniatures, jewelry and couture, home decor and chandeliers. They also sell beads and rhinestones, encouraging other manufacturers, artists and consumers to create their own designs.

All sculptures are marked with a logo. The original Swarovski logo was an edelweiss flower, but was replaced with the current swan logo in 1988.

In order to create a crystal that allows light to refract in a rainbow spectrum, Swarovski coats some of its crystals with special metallic chemical coatings. Aurora Borealis, or "AB", is one of the most popular coatings, and gives the surface a rainbow oil slick appearance.

Other coatings include Crystal Transmission, Volcano, Aurum, and Dorado. Coatings may be applied to only part of an object; others are coated twice, and thus are designated AB 2X, Dorado 2X etc.
